RACGP QI&CPD

Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR

This course has been allocated 5 category 2 points in the QI&CPD Program for the 2017-2019 Triennium for GP’s.

Aim

To learn and demonstrate effective CPR and Basic Life Support in accordance with the ANZCOR 2016 Guidelines (Australian & New Zealand Committee On Resuscitation).

Relevance to General Practice

Basic Life Support (BLS) and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) skills are used infrequently, and therefore may diminish over time. Maintaining frequent training updates are crucial to staying up-to-date on best practice and also for the competence of practicing these skills if and when they may be required. The chances of survival can be greatly improved if the trained rescuer has the practical skill as well as the knowledge to act appropriately and quickly to the emergency. The RACGP minimum requirements are to complete CPR competence every 3 years, though IntelliLearn recommends yearly updates in line with other Medical Professions.

Learning Outcomes

Learning Outcomes include:
  • Define the DRSABCD algorithm
  • Discuss the importance and key issues related to each of the DRSABCD steps
  • Explain the correct procedure to manage choking
  • Understand the basic principles of C.P.R.
  • Attach and operate an A.E.D.
  •
The online component of BLS should be followed up with practical face-to-face training and assessment through a separate arrangement with IntelliLearn.
